PhD research topics

The positions address fundamental and computational problems in low-temperature and high-pressure plasma physics, combining theory, numerical simulation and, where relevant, experimental validation.

1

Self-organisation on liquid electrodes in glow discharges in air

Study the formation, stability and transitions of self-organised patterns at plasma–liquid interfaces through physical modelling, numerical simulation and comparison with experimental evidence.

2

Numerical simulation of gas discharges, including corona and gliding arcs

Develop two- and three-dimensional models of low-temperature, high-pressure discharges, addressing plasma chemistry, energy transfer, Joule heating and plasma–flow interaction as appropriate.

3

Stability of self-sustained DC discharges in air

Investigate stationary and pulsed regimes in positive and negative corona discharges using theory, numerical simulation and experimental validation. Work on breakdown along dielectric surfaces may also be included.

Who should get in touch?

We welcome expressions of interest from motivated candidates with a Master's degree or equivalent in Physics or a closely related field.

  • Strong interest in plasma physics and fundamental research;
  • Motivation for theoretical, computational and/or experimental work;
  • Experience with scientific programming, numerical methods or plasma experiments is an advantage;
  • Good command of English and willingness to work in an international research environment.

This page is an informal announcement intended to identify interested candidates. Formal recruitment notices, eligibility requirements and application procedures will be published by the University of Madeira.
